A lone driver lost control of his vehicle just before 6 a.m. Saturday and collided with a power pole on Soledad Canyon Road between Gladding Way and Commuter Way, sheriff’s officials said. County Fire officials pronounced him dead at the scene.

Coroner’s officials withheld the man’s identity Saturday pending family notification.

Investigators did not know what caused the man’s vehicle to crash.

“There’s no skid marks so it’s not as though he tried to avoid the crash itself,” said Sgt. Richard Cohen.

Cohen said there’s always the possibility the man, who was travelling westbound on Soledad Canyon Road in the middle lane, could have suffered a medical problem before he hit the pole.

“We don’t know if this was medically induced prior to the crash,” said Sgt. Richard Cohen.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Cohen said.

Several hours after the collision the driver’s Honda Civic still sat smashed against the pole with airbags inflated and a shredded front tire. Los Angeles County firefighters lifted the man’s body out of the vehicle.

Firefighters had to sever the roof from the vehicle and shatter the windows to remove the body from the vehicle, Cohen said.

The man was in his 30s, said Kelsie Weber, a Los Angeles County Department of Coroner investigator.

Traffic moved slowly past the shattered vehicle as deputies blocked off two westbound lanes of Soledad Canyon Road most of the morning. Sheriff’s detectives will continue to investigate the cause of the crash.

Anyone who might have witnessed the collision can contact Detective Robert Smoldt, of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, at (661) 799-5111.
