I'm glad those few days of scorching weather are behind us! However, I know that August will bring those triple digits back in full force, but until then, I'm enjoying this rainy, cool weather. Ahhh!

Memorial Day tribute
Memorial Day is more than another three-day weekend; it is also time to remember those in the Armed Forces who've sacrificed so much for us here at home. A special Memorial Day Tribute to Veterans will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Eternal Valley memorial Park, 23287 Sierra Highway, in Newhall. Residents are invited to dress in red, white and blue and attend the 20th annual Memorial Day Tribute. This year's event will be dedicated to the veterans of World War II and Korea. The event will also feature a flyover of vintage WWII aircraft. During the one hour observance the National Anthem will be sung by Patti King and her daughters, Alison King, Trish Kruger and Cheralyn Goeckertiz. The guest speaker will be First Sergeant Richard Casper, a U.S. Army retiree and a veteran of the war in Iraq. A flyover by a U.S. Air Force C17 will end the tribute.

Rattlesnake Slim's in Newhall
I had the great good fortune to attend a fun blues evening at Rattlesnake Slims (23127 Lyons Ave. in Newhall), on Friday. Mike Dill and company offered up a delightful evening which ended with a good, old-fashioned sing-along of the Band's "The Weight." Rattlesnake Slims is a wonderfully eclectic place of coffee, tea and tack (a little reminiscent of an old time general store. Owner Gordon Mehterian makes an awesome cup of hot chocolate, too! Check it out, it's a fun place with some great stuff!

Kudos to Excelencia Award winners
The Santa Clarita Repertory Theatre was the location of the fifth annual Excelencia Awards presented by the Hispanic Business Committee.

Among those feted were the 2008 Youth Advocate Community Leaders: The Betty Ferguson Foundation, Cynthia Llerenas and Jamie Castellanos: Avance Award - Hispanic Business of the Year, El Trocadero Restaurant (owner Raul Bojorquez accepted); Amistad Award - Community Leader of the Year, Individual: Susie Szabo, Old Town Newhall Association. Business: Samuel Dixon Health Foundation (board president Ed Bolden accepting); Adelante Award - Corporate Partner of the Year, AT&T (Dana Cop, director external affairs, accepting).

It was a fun evening with selected excerpts from The Rep's "Full Monty" (performed by the cast) and songs from the teen musical "Quixote" (performed by Shad Hunter, Robert Acinapura, Annie Horak and Michael Watanabe with musical accompaniment by Dan Kirkpatrick).
