The McFarland apple fell close to the tree

Just came across Bruce McFarland's column ("Remembering my mother, the activist," Oct. 20) about his mom (Jeannette McFarland) the activist.

How many sons can say that about their mom? What a heartwarming story and tribute to his mother and grandmother.

His mother was very lucky to have a mother like his grandmother, and he was lucky to have a mother like Jeannette!
Jeannette and Dora were two outstanding women.

For both women to have a passion for education and keeping a dream alive to go to college at the age of 52 is an feat of endurance. To be an activist and a woman in the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s etc. was very courageous.

It seems that "the apple didn't fall far from the tree," for both Jeannette and Bruce.

Bruce McFarland, be thankful that you come from good genes. Good luck to you now and in the future.
