Please don’t leave pets in hot cars

On May 14, it was 93 degrees outside at noon. I got out of my car in the Mervyn’s shopping center and I could hear a dog barking. I thought to myself that no one could be stupid enough to leave a dog in a parked car in this heat. I was able to trace the barking to a silver Toyota Sienna minivan, license number 5DXL812. The van was parked partially in the shade of a small tree and partially in the sun. The two front windows were cracked about half an inch. I called Animal Control and was on hold for 15 minutes before I was able to report the problem. I stood by the van while on hold waiting for an animal control officer to answer the phone. After reporting the problem I walked to a store for about five minutes. I went back out and the van with the dog was still there. My car was parked directly in front of the van so I decided to crack my two front windows half an inch each to see how hot it would get inside. Within five minutes I was sweating and very uncomfortable. I now knew how this poor dog felt.Thirty minutes after I arrived a woman and a female who appeared to be in her teens came walking out toward the minivan with drinks in their hands from a food establishment. As they started to get in the vehicle I stepped out of my vehicle and told her that her dog had been barking the entire time she was gone. She sarcastically said “thanks,” starting laughing, and then got into her minivan. Then both she and the teenage girl began laughing. How selfish of this person to leave the dog in a van while they sit in an air conditioned restaurant. What type of example is this woman setting for the teenage girl sitting in the car with her? I have a great idea. The next time it is 93 degrees outside, this woman should go park in the lot and roll the windows down half an inch and sit there for 30 minutes. I would love to see how she feels after 10 minutes. Of course I could never expect anyone this selfish to try to put herself in the place of her animal. She clearly does not care about her dog. Do not take your animals with you if you are going to have to get out of the car and leave your animal in there. They are much better off at home where it is ventilated.
