West Ranch football is somewhere it has wanted to be for a long time.

The conversation.

The Wildcats will attempt the next step toward their first-ever postseason appearance against a Hart team looking for redemption at 7 p.m. tonight at Dr. Paul A. Priesz Stadium.

"Week 9 and 10 matter. That's where we needed to be and that's where we are," said West Ranch head coach Sean O'Brien.

The Indians (5-3, 2-1) have noticed.

"We see a good, solid, well-coached team," said Hart head coach Mike Herrington. "They are kind of on a high right now because they got their first non-Golden Valley Foothill League win last week. They are excited about their program over there. ... They beat us and they have a good chance of playoffs."

Hart, West Ranch (5-3, 2-1) and Saugus are all tied for second place in the Foothill League.

Last week, the Wildcats beat Canyon 23-18, whereas the Indians suffered a 56-7 loss to Valencia.

"I know they are still disappointed, not as much at they lost, but how we played and how we didn't respond to a lot of things," Herrington said. "I think everyone was a little shocked."

Hart was held in check offensively, something that West Ranch hopes to do.

O'Brien expects big games from several key players, including Joe Barbosa, who recently moved from linebacker to defensive end, and Patrick Kelly, who is stepping into a larger defensive role.

O'Brien said the goal is simple.

"Make them go deeper into their playbook," he said. "Problem is, Herrington's playbook is very deep."

Hart's focus remains unchanged.

"Week-in and week-out, we just try to take advantage of what the defense gives us," Herrington said. "Some weeks, one receiver is going to get a lot of balls. It all depends on what the defense is giving."
