In its quest to clear the way for a new library in Newhall, the city of Santa Clarita is hoping to finalize the purchase of a 6,200 square feet of property along Spruce Street.

On Tuesday, the City Council will consider giving staff the green light to spend $1.2 million to buy the property and 3,000-square-foot building currently occupied by White Light Chiropractic at 24519 Spruce St. in downtown Newhall.

The city already owns most of the property on the block where Lyons Avenue, Main Street and Spruce Street meet. The city owns the parcels occupied by CarQuest Auto Parts and the Paws for Fun dog grooming business. In addition to the site of the chiropractic business, the city is negotiating to purchase the site of Just Passing Thru Body Piercing.

The owner of White Light Chiropractic could not be reached for comment Thursday.

The businesses would become tenants with the city until the city and county move forward with construction plans on a 16,000 to 30,000-square-foot library. The new library is part of the city's effort to revitalize the aging downtown area of Newhall. The city has rerouted the heavy traffic off of Main Street to give the area a more pedestrian-friendly street and plans are also in the works to bring significantly more landscaping - or streetscaping - to Main Street.

The purchase price negotiated for the 24519 Spruce St. property is $1.2 million and an additional $25,000 is needed for escrow, title and other fees.

The council meets at 6 p.m. in the City Council Chambers of City Hall at 23920 Valencia Blvd.
