Four local high school bands will compete in one of the nation’s most prominent marching band championships today at College of the Canyons’ Cougar Stadium.

Nearly 30 bands from California, Arizona and Texas will compete in the preliminary competition of the Bands of America Regional Championship, presented by Yamaha. Preliminary performances start at 7:45 a.m. with the presentation of awards at 4:45 p.m.

During the preliminary completion, Valencia, Canyon, West Ranch and William S. Hart high schools bands will perform and be evaluated by a plane of nationally known music educators and marching band experts.

“For us, it’s a big deal,” said Jason Marshall, West Ranch’s director of instrumental music. “It’s an opportunity for my kids to see amazing bands from areas they don’t normally see bands from and to go against the very best.”

“My students are really focused and excited for it and I think they’re going to have an awesome performance on Saturday,” he added.

The top 10 scoring bands will advance to the evening finals competitions, where the Regional Champion will be named. Gates open for finals at 6:45 p.m.

Standard general admission is $19 for prelims or finals or $30 to attend both.

All children ages 10 and under are free for general admission seats. For those ages 11 to 18, the cost to attend either prelims or finals is $9 each or $15 for a day pass. Seniors 62 and over get $4 off the applicable adult ticket price. Active duty military members who present their military ID and their spouses can attend prelims or finals for $9 each or $15 for a day pass. Ticket discounts available on Saturday at ticketing window.

Bands of America is a program of the nonprofit organization based in India, Music for All, which supports active music-making. Music for All presents more than 20 music education events nationwide annually.
