Progressives are simply barbarians

Seventeen years ago it was Hillarycare and gays in the military. Today it’s Obamacare and gay marriage.

Progressives remain forever undaunted — determined to reshape the social, economic, legal and moral foundations of our country, and in that determination they are akin to the relentless barbarians of yore.

In our 21st century, lawyers have replaced catapults, but the upshot is the same: Unsatisfied with their stagnant swamps (Europe, anyone?) they lay siege to the establishment here. That which came before or exists beyond their current borders, insults a keen sense of righteousness.

At the other end of the spectrum, conservatives are hunkered down in enclaves. They see themselves preserving a heritage and conserving the most precious resource of all: liberty. Historically, the barbarians are almost always outnumbered or outgunned, but in the end they usually win anyway through sheer perseverance — and yet remain largely unsatisfied.

Ironic, isn’t it?

Environmentalists are horrified when man lays siege to nature, but they stand aside when their fellow travellers lay siege to a far more fragile heritage. And unlike the eons within nature, our heritage lasts only a single generation unless the next one learns and defends its value.

Of course, the smartest minds on the left understand that vulnerability and that is why the siege never stops. Instead, it incrementally finds success, consistent, ceaseless, like a ratchet. Moreover, since utopia by definition can never be reached, their struggle has no end.

Never mind the failure that has always attended actual leftist policies — the motivation for the left is “progress” defined as action itself — or, in the current vernacular, “hope and change.” Results are entirely beside the point.

In fact, discussions of actual results — like discussions about heritage — are upsetting and immaterial. They merely get in the way of the grand pursuit to overrun the barricades and rush headlong to the next conquest.
