West Ranch got one step closer to claiming its piece of the Foothill League title.

The Wildcats defeated Golden Valley 11-1 in a wind-shortened match at Golden Valley High.

Mallory Martin and True O'Neill won two sets in doubles action for the Wildcats.

Golden Valley freshman Rebecca Ho claimed the lone set win for the Grizzlies.

The Wildcats (8-4, 8-1) also moved up to No. 4 in the CIF-Southern Section Division III poll this week, just days after ending No. 3 Valencia's 56-match Foothill League winning streak.

"I'm just impressed with what the girls have brought to the court this season," said West Ranch head coach Eric Spiecker. "It's a story of improvement and playing well at the right time, which is something we hope for for the playoffs."

Spiecker was particularly excited Tuesday about the play of senior captain Penny Azizi, who came back from a rotator cuff injury to play her first match of the season.

She teamed with Lena Poonnopatam to win a set 6-1.

West Ranch hosts Canyon on Thursday in both teams' league finales.

A win would give the Wildcats at least a share of their first ever Foothill girls tennis title.

Golden Valley (4-13, 2-7), which won its first-ever Foothill matches this season, plays at Hart on Thursday.
