The best picks for the Hart district

The election for the William S. Hart Union High School District board is important. While not the largest operating budget in the Santa Clarita Valley anymore, the Hart district is the largest employer (excepting Six Flags Magic Mountain during the summer season) for the valley.

Directing the district are five board members, and this year there are three positions up for election. Someone asked recently how we selected a candidate for a clerical position from a list of 300 applicants. Experience comes first. If the experience is sound, the other skills required be they communication, analytical, teamwork, cooperation, dependability, integrity and commitment will be ultimately obvious (or not) by their personal history.

Voters have three candidates with the experience to continue or step into a board position: Paul Strickland, Suzan Solomon and Robert Jensen.

Strickland has exemplified the skills and dedication to his position on the Hart board for eight years. His knowledge of the district mission, strategic plan, state budget, personnel, fine arts and academic curriculum and much more is critical to the continued success the district has demonstrated during his time on the board.

When it comes to breadth of knowledge and experience with schools and education, Solomon has exceeded all prerequisites for the position. In 10 years of experience on the Newhall School District board in times of serious budget cutbacks, new school construction and academic improvement, Solomon had made an impressive mark on the future of children that come to the Hart District.

Combine her local experience with active involvement in legislative issues at city, county and state levels where Santa Clarita schools are concerned and she becomes one of the most important assets to local schools. Her work is recognized and her campaign is endorsed by our state Superintendent of Public Instruction, Jack O'Connell, as well county Supervisor Michael Antonovich. She has devoted time and energy as a leader with local, regional and state PTA organizations, statewide CSBA (the state association for school board members) and LACSTA (countywide association for school board members). She is ready for the job and deserves your vote Nov. 3.

Robert Jensen, currently a Newhall School District board member, will be the only board member with children in the district. He oversaw the modernization of schools, pushed for continued academic improvement and contributed to the maintenance of a fiscally sound budget in tough economic times. As a CPA, Bob offers a financial insight that will continue to protect taxpayers as state budget problems persist.

Bob is a true believer in public education and the impact it has on our children and the community we serve. The Newhall district has excelled with California Distinguished and National Blue Ribbon recognition during his term.Strickland, Solomon and Jensen deserve your vote.
