Sometimes you've just got to go with the candidates that you know best, and that is why I am voting Brian Koegle for College of the Canyons' governing board and Joe Messina for the William S. Hart Union High School District board. I understand what Koegle and Messina bring to the prospective offices they are running for.

Do I agree with everything these two individuals believe? No. But I trust their motivations for running for public office and believe they will do the best jobs of the candidates running in their respective races.

Particularly, Brian Koegle was raised in the Santa Clarita Valley and returned here after college (which began with a two-year stint at COC) to become a partner in one of the most successful law firms in the Valley and raise his family. He is a young, progressive-thinking leader with more real-world leadership experience than candidates twice his age.

Joe Messina will bring to the Hart district board a renewed commitment to offering high school students alternatives to a traditional college. Career training is big part of the work I do as the executive director of a statewide association of building contractors.

Formalized apprenticeship programs and other combination classroom/on the job training programs offer the non-college-minded student an opportunity to dive right into the career of their choosing without wasting money in a two-year or four-year college that will net them nothing. Failure to prepare non-college bound students for the workforce needs to be a much greater priority than it is today. Joe Messina shares this belief.

Brian Koegle and Joe Messina are the only candidates that I am endorsing in this election, but the entire field is made up of great people who truly want to make a difference. I ask that you vote for Brian Koegle and Joe Messina on Nov. 3.
