The upcoming Nov. 3 Board of Trustees election for the Santa Clarita Community College District, specifically, College of the Canyons, is made all the more critical given the current status of the California and national economy.

The alarming reduction in funding will undoubtedly threaten educational programs and academic affairs. That is why it is essential the voters of Santa Clarita Valley re-elect incumbent Joan MacGregor for seat No. 3 and elect Michael Berger to open seat No. 1.

MacGregor's increasing willingness to work with all member groups at COC and her detailed knowledge of budgetary matters will ensure board continuity in these critical times. The growth and proven successes of the college during her tenure is undeniable.

Many in the community have indicated the need for change. Within a different context, we might be inclined to agree. However, change for the mere sake of change can be counter-productive. There is nothing in MacGregor's record of service to suggest she is not highly attuned to the nuances of campus governance.

Michael Berger's candidacy offers COC the positive change many, including this publication, seek. His years of educational experience with the COC Foundation, Finance Committee for the Performing Arts Center, strong community and campus ties and enthusiasm for strong relations with faculty make him particularly well-suited for board membership. A Berger victory will reinforce the continuity made certain by MacGregor's re-election. That is why we collectively offer our strongest endorsement for Joan
MacGregor and Michael Berger for election to the Board of Trustees.
