I am writing because I believe greatly in College of the Canyons. I have worked here for 22 years as an instructional administrator, athletic director and mathematics professor. I am also the proud father of a graduate (2007) and future graduate (2014) of our college.

What has allowed College of the Canyons to transform from a relatively unknown institution to one of the premier community colleges in California over the past two decades has been leadership.

The board of trustees is an integral part of district leadership as it sets policy, protects our financial health and creates a supportive campus climate for innovation, community partnerships and quality instruction.

Two individuals, Joan MacGregor and Michael Berger, have the prerequisite experience, temperament and skills to faithfully and carefully fulfill these responsibilities. I have personally witnessed both Joan and Michael from both near and afar as they have volunteered thousands of hours of dedicated service to our institution. They both have a familiarity with and a profound commitment to College of the Canyons.

These two candidates have shown they are up to leading in times that require resourcefulness and collaboration. They have represented our community well in many and varied capacities with energy, enthusiasm and intellect including serving on our board of trustees (Joan) and foundation board (Michael). I invite you to visit their Web sites for further exploration of their lists of impressive skills, experiences and community involvement.

This is a crucial election for our college. I urge you to invest your vote in a manner that will assist those of us who are educating students in these challenging economic times.

Michael Berger (seat 1) & Joan MacGregor (seat 3) are the right choice for the Santa Clarita Community College Board of Trustees election this Nov. 3.
