Three boys were arrested after they allegedly conspired to assault a fellow Valencia High School student and assaulted him with an aluminum baseball bat after school on Tuesday, sheriff's Lt. Tom Bryski said.

The attack took place shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Newhall Ranch Road and Dickason Drive, when a 16-year-old suspect allegedly spouted a racial comment and a gang name and then hit the victim on his head with the bat.

"My son was walking home when three boys came up from behind him," the victim's mother told The Signal on the condition of anonymity, describing how her son was hit by the oldest suspect. "He was hit with an aluminum baseball bat in the back of the head, and he continued to hit him after that."

She said that the boy struck her son with the bat five times, on the leg, back, arm and wrist. The victim, who is Hispanic, had a 2-inch laceration on the back of his head.

Bryski said the suspect, a 16-year-old boy, and two of his male accomplices, ages 15 and 13, respectively, were arrested late Tuesday evening.

The suspect, described by witnesses as a white boy wearing a red bandana, red shirt and grey Dickies pants, allegedly conspired with two other students to attack the victim after school.

According to the victim, who asked that his name not be used, he had a confrontation with the 15-year-old conspirator earlier in the day.

He added that the 15-year-old conspirator, who initiated the confrontation by yelling derogatory statements toward the victim, also ended the confrontation by running away. The victim added that the 15-year-old probably teamed up with the bat-wielding suspect and the 13-year-old to plan an assault later in the afternoon was related to the earlier incident.

"I was just listening to my iPod when this guy in a red bandana hit the back of my head with a bat," the victim said, adding that the suspect allegedly yelled racial and gang-related slurs as he attacked.

The 16-year-old suspect was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, while both the 13-year-old and 15-year-old were charged with conspiracy.

All three were booked at Juvenile Hall in Sylmar.

Deputies identified the suspects with the help of the victim, who found pictures of them in a Valencia High yearbook brought to him while he was treated for injuries Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital on Tuesday.
