Here’s an ‘American’ idea for you

In his letter to the editor ("Symptoms of failed health care," Oct. 3) Dr. Gene Dorio decries insurance companies for "standing between doctors and patients."

Okay, then. Let's accept that premise, Gene, but let's follow it through to its logical conclusion, because by the same logic the only worse thing would be having the government stand between doctors and patients. After all, with the government, there's no place for the dissatisfied to go.

So here's an alternative (some might even say "American") idea: How about we let people choose freely for themselves? Those who want an insurer to "stand between them and their doctor" (or between them and their auto collision repairman or house rebuilder or liability under suit) can choose that route, and those who don't, won't.

After all, nothing is more clarifying than treating adults like adults and allowing them to take responsibility for themselves.
