Detectives are awaiting results from an autopsy performed Wednesday on human remains found in the riverbed near the South Fork bike trail last week, officials said.

The test results will determine the unidentified man’s cause of death, said Los Angeles County sheriff’s Detective Patrick Nelson.
Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station deputies received a call last Thursday from a local resident who found the partially decomposed body of a man in the trail while searching for a lost pet just south of Magic Mountain Parkway, Nelson said.

Homicide Bureau detectives arrived at the scene a couple of hours later, investigating into early Friday morning, Nelson said.

The detectives found the remains partially clothed and in open view.

“There was not really an attempt to cover it or hide it,” Nelson said. “It wasn’t something that was visible unless you were literally in the wash.”

Detectives, who have not yet identified the body or determined the circumstance of his death, are investigating the case as a homicide.

“We would treat it that way until it’s determined otherwise,” Nelson said.

Detectives are asking people with information about the identity or death of the man to contact the Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
