Food Pantry gives brushes

In celebration of National Dental Hygiene Month, the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry is distributing a new toothbrush to each of its clients courtesy of local donors and dentists including Dr. Tom Schoenbaum, Dr. Alan Barbakow, Dr. Gina Dorfman and Dr. Dell Goodrick.

The Food Pantry distributes supplemental food to the neediest of residents in the SCV.

"We care very much about the health of our clients. Low income families struggle every day just to purchase the very basics of existence - food and shelter.

Medical and dental care are a luxury item to many of these families," said executive director Belinda Crawford, Food Pantry executive director.

During the first toothbrush giveaway celebrating National Dental Hygiene Month in 2006 Crawford learned that the children of some of the Food Pantry's clients were sharing toothbrushes so it was decided the toothbrush giveaway should become an annual event.
Due to the current economic climate, the SCV Food Pantry experienced a 60 percent increase in the number of individuals seeking assistance in 2008 over the same period in 2007. The first six months of 2009 has shown a 33 percent increase over 2008.
