God bless Godfrey

God bless you, Jo Godfrey (“One woman’s battle,” Oct. 11), for your courage and tenacity in fighting for health care reform.

As a former registered nurse, I was acutely aware of the two-tiered health care system in this country. (The haves with insurance who had access to care, and the have-nots without insurance).

It wasn’t until I was diagnosed with cancer nearly four years ago, however, that I experienced first-hand the reality of how abysmal our system is.

My surgery was delayed almost two months waiting for insurance approval. As a result, the cancer went from stage II to stage III and I ended up on chemotherapy.

Now because of my medical history, I cannot get insurance and am not able to get needed follow-up care.

I too have contacted Congressman Howard “Buck” McKeon’s office several times. I received a form letter outlining his support for tax credits to purchase health insurance. Exactly how is that going to help someone like me?

To all of you who are against health care reform, please understand that my situation is not unique and except for the grace of God, you could be in my shoes.

Please look beyond the rhetoric and imagine what it would be like if your child was ill and you couldn’t get treatment for them because you had lost your job or your insurance company refused to approve the treatment.

This is not about charity. This is about holding our elected officials accountable to US, not to the rich and powerful insurance industry.

It is criminal that these insurance executives make astronomical salaries by denying life-saving care. It is criminal that our country is the only industrialized nation in the world that doesn’t care if its people die because they cant afford to go to the doctor.
