Firefighters rushed to contain a 15-acre brush fire burning in the U.S. National Forest, north of the Santa Clarita Valley and south of Elizabeth Lake on San Francisquito Canyon Road near Powerhouse Lateral 14 this afternoon.

As of 6 p.m. the blaze was 30 percent contained, according to Inspector Frank Garrido of the L.A. County Fire Dept.

Strong winds caused a transformer to be pulled down shortly after 3:15 p.m., he said, causing an explosion and igniting a fire in the immediate vicinity.

Garrido also stated the fire was travelling north and uphill.

Fire Station 73 in Newhall and the U.S. Forest Service responded to the fire in a unified command, with more than 100 personnel, six engines, four helicopters and three camp crews.

San Francisquito Canyon Road remains open.
