Runners of all ages and ability levels will take a bite out of hunger Sunday, Oct. 25 in the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry's 16th Annual Run Against Hunger.

The fundraising run, sponsored by Bayless Engineering and Manufacturing as well as many other local individuals and businesses, is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. at Newhall Park.

The course is an "out-and-back" five kilometers that also finishes at the park. The race, sanctioned by the Southern California Track and Field Association, will be held rain or shine.

"We're so grateful to all of the sponsors and runners who are helping make the Run Against Hunger a success," said Belinda Crawford, executive director of the SCV Food Pantry.

"The need now is greater than ever. In 2008, we distributed food to more than 5,500 individuals - a 60 percent increase over 2007 in the number served. In the first quarter this year we saw a 48 percent increase over the same period in 2008. We also serve an ever-growing population of senior citizens on fixed incomes who must make the choice to purchase their medications or the food they need each month."

Run Against Hunger participants can register at 7 a.m. on race day, and the race entry fees ($25 for over 60 or under 12, $30 for adults) include refreshments, souvenir T-shirt and participation in post-race drawings. Awards will be three deep for males and females in various age divisions, plus overall male and female winners.

All net proceeds will benefit the Food Pantry's efforts to provide supplemental food to the working poor in the SCV, and to continue striving for the Food Pantry's mission to ensure that no child in the SCV will go to bed hungry.
