On the morning of Wednesday, Oct. 21, the city of Santa Clarita will join more than 42 countries worldwide in celebrating International Bike and Walk to School Month, which promotes forgoing cars in favor of walking or biking to school.

Four local elementary schools are set to participate in the program from 8 to 9 a.m., including Rio Vista, North Park, Old Orchard and Pinetree Community.

The city began taking steps toward increasing the number of local kids biking or walking to school through the implementation of its Safe Routes to School Infrastructure Program. Bike and Walk to School Month puts these infrastructure efforts to work, using a variety of tools to make it easier and safer for children to walk and bike to school.

Each child who participates will be entered to win prizes, such as in-class parties and a new bike.
