Elected officials and College of the Canyons leaders will celebrate the opening of the 110,000-square-foot Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

A number of speakers are scheduled to celebrate the opening, including Congressman Howard “Buck” McKeon, Assemblyman Cameron Smyth, Fred Harris of the California Community College System Chancellor’s Office, COC board President Joan MacGregor and, of course, Van Hook, chancellor of COC.

The ceremony will include the unveiling of a special “donor monument” waterfall.

After the ceremony, visitors will have the opportunity to tour the state-of-the-art center while learning more about the University Center’s partner institutions and lineup of academic programs.

Cited as the college’s solution to the lack of upper division, graduate school and continuing education programs in the area, the University Center was created with a goal to increase student access to advanced degrees by creating partnerships with surrounding four-year colleges and universities, which then make their academic programs available to students at College of the Canyons.

The University Center, located on COC’s Valencia campus, will house up to 10 partner institutions and offer more than 50 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees and credential programs.

The University Center is located at 24655 Rockwell Canyon Road in Valencia.
