Lunetta passes off lies as fact

It's truly sad that Steve Lunetta's column ("The stench coming from ACORN," The Signal, Oct. 12) is another example of a conservative making up things and passing them off as fact. He then decries the made up situation. His column is both factually incorrect and backed by information provided by an organization that provides "made as instructed" studies.

A simple search of either Factcheck.org or Snopes.com would show that Barack Obama never worked for, or served as counsel to, ACORN. Instead, Lunetta states, "of course, we all know Mr. (not President) Obama worked for ACORN as legal counsel." The truth is that ACORN did endorse Obama's candidacy, and his campaign did hire ACORN, as well as other liberal groups, to register voters in 2008 - nothing more.

He quotes from a four part series from the Employment Policies Institute. This organization is one of numerous important sounding front groups for a D.C. public relations company owned by Rick Berman.

Berman and Co. lobbies for, among others, the Tobacco, Alcoholic Beverages, Hotel and Restaurant trade organizations.

Among its various sham organizations are ones that promote the usage of sugar, the benefits of trans-fats and the "lies' of global warming scientists. Berman's problem with ACORN arose from ACORN's advocacy for raising the minimum wage in the Restaurant and Hotel industries

All of Berman's entities are established as 501(c)(3) tax exempt organizations. As such they are not required to make public their donors or sponsors. In an interview with Rachel Maddow, within the last few weeks, Berman made no attempt to deny that his organizations were anything other than organs for whichever interest group will pay the fees. He stated that their positions deserve to be heard.

I agree. However, they must be called out when they try and pass themselves off as independent, impartial researchers.
