One of the 200 bills signed late Sunday night by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was AB 110, authored by Assemblyman Cameron Smyth and supported by the city of Santa Clarita, to add Elsmere Canyon back into the Rim of the Valley corridor.

The bill is part of Santa Clarita's decades-long effort to protect and preserve Elsmere Canyon, which is partially in the Angeles National Forest near the terminus of Newhall Avenue and the Highway 14 freeway.

"I am extremely happy that AB 110 has been signed and is moving forward," said Santa Clarita Councilmember Marsha McLean. "The language that places Elsmere Canyon back into the Rim of the Valley corridor will go a long way towards protecting and preserving this beautiful canyon.
"
"The Parks and Open Space: Rim of the Valley Trail Corridor" bill calls for a revision of the boundaries by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy of the corridor in the vicinity of Placerita Canyon and Highway 14, including Whitney Canyon, to include these areas and their watersheds.

The Santa Clarita City Council approved the bill as a sponsor on Jan. 27. AB 110 repeals language placed into state law in 1999 that prohibits Elsmere Canyon from being included within the corridor because at that time Elsmere Canyon was under active consideration as a landfill site.
