The Grizzlies football team fell behind early and dropped its pre-league finale 56-0 to Paraclete on Saturday at Knight High School.

Golden Valley head coach Andy Campbell was at a loss for words when trying to find positives from a game that saw several of his players hurt with little production on the scoreboard for all their efforts.

Making matters worse, Golden Valley (0-5) now must prepare for a Foothill League schedule that begins on Friday against West Ranch.

"Nothing good came out of this game," Campbell said.
The Grizzlies' woes started with their first possession, losing junior quarterback Matt Wickham to an injury.

Junior Andrew Avila played quarterback for most of the first half, but went down with an undisclosed injury seconds before halftime and did not return.

Senior Joseph Figueroa stepped in to take a couple of snaps to end the half, and sophomore Bret Melton played quarterback for the second half.

Regardless of who was leading the huddle, Golden Valley had little success moving the ball and finished with less than 20 yards of net offense in the first half.

Meanwhile, Paraclete (3-3) scored early and often.

Junior quarterback Cameron Carvalho ran for the end zone from 3 yards out to score the Spirits' first touchdown with 6:35 left in the first quarter.

Senior fullback Justin Vargas ran in a second touchdown for the Spirits from 4 yards out a little more than three minutes later.

Paraclete continued to march down the field, scoring again on a 12-yard carry by senior Kyland Warren at the start of the second quarter. Junior wide receiver Lavonte Barnett scored Paraclete's fourth touchdown less than five minutes later.

A 60-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and a 17-yard run by senior fullback John Pratt put the Spirits up 42-0 at the break.

Without Avila in the second half, Golden Valley couldn't find an offense, while Paraclete switched quarterbacks and continued its ability to drive and score.

Senior Gabe Martinez connected with a wide open Rosevelt Davis for a touchdown with 5:47 left in the third. The Spirits' final score was a Davis run from 6 yards out with less than five minutes left.

Paraclete head coach Norm Dahlia said he had challenged his team to finish their drives and he was proud of the way his team responded.

"The kids stepped up today," Dahlia said. "They came out ready to play and focused."

Carvalho was a perfect 6-for-6 passing with 114 yards. Davis carried the ball 11 times for 59 yards.

For Golden Valley, Avila completed just 3-of-8 passes for 10 yards.

"We've got work to do," Campbell said. "That's all we can do is work."
