Finally, we've had nice, cooler weather. One can almost sense fall in the air... almost!

Light the Night

The annual Light the Night walk to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society will be held Saturday at Bridgeport Park in Valencia. The festival begins at 5 p.m. and the walk will begin at 7 p.m. Join this national evening walk to celebrate and commemorate lives touched by cancer. The Signal will field a team of walkers, too. We will be walking in honor of and in support of our publisher, Ian Lamont. For information www.lightthenight.org/los/.

Last day to Expo

I hope everyone has found the new Expo location at the Santa Clarita Sport Complex to be a big improvement over that stifling tent that previously housed the Expo event. Today is Expo's last hurrah; the Santa Clarita Sports Complex is located at 20880 Centre Pointe Parkway near the intersection of Golden Valley Road (behind the Aquatics Center). Sponsored by the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce, the annual exposition is a chance for businesses to connect with local residents.

Nearly 100 businesses and organizations have set up shop at Expo. Stop by The Signal's booth, too. Today there will be free flu shots courtesy of Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. Medical staff will be on hand throughout the weekend to administer free flu shots for senior citizens and caregivers. Flu shots will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more Expo info visit www.scvchamber.com.

Bow-Wows & Meows Pet Fair

It's a busy day today in the SCV. Another "must"-attend event is the annual Bow-Wows & Meows Pet Fair featuring pet-related products and samples, "Fun Dog Show," Dogs Can Dance demos, a Kids Zone, low-cost vaccinations and ID tags, food and refreshments, entertainment, and more than 100 adoptable pets from L.A. County Shelters. The fair runs 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., today at William S. Hart Park, 24151 Newhall Ave., Newhall. Free for the whole family, leashed pets welcome. Info: www.bowwowsandmeows.org.

Step Out Walk to Fight Diabetes

More than a thousand walkers will walk to fight diabetes with honorary chairman and SCV celeb Rick Chambers, 8 a.m. - noon, today at Bridgeport Park, Newhall Ranch Road and Grandview, Valencia. Live entertainment, product sampling, and activities. Support the walkers who are raising money to fight diabetes. For information visit www.stepout.diabetes.org.

Run Against Hunger sponsors needed

The Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry is seeking sponsors at all levels for the 16th Annual Run/Walk Against Hunger scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 25 at Newhall Park. All proceeds benefit the less fortunate in the SCV. Info: (661) 255-9078 or info@scvfoodpantry.org.

Wonderful SCV!

I look at all the events that are held in the SCV that benefit others in need and I think, "Aren't we lucky to live in such a place that puts a priority on taking care of each other?" We are lucky, indeed.

Heritage Haunt awaits!

Don't forget that Saturday is the launch of the Heritage Haunt to benefit the SCV Historical Society. The Haunt kicks off at 7 p.m. at Heritage Junction adjacent to Hart Park in Newhall. It looks like a scary good time. Visit www.scvhs.org.
