Dear Castaic voters:

I'm writing to you in support of John Zaring, candidate for the Castaic Union School District board. I've known John since our kids were in pre-school together and know just how seriously John takes his kids' education.

How seriously? Well, for the first time in his life the guy's running for public office, an additional responsibility that brings along with it hard work, long hours, political wrangling and tough decisions.

Is he doing it for the money or the power? Not in this position, folks. So why would be choose to take on something so unglamorous?

Because when John was the campaign manager for a recent bond measure that raised $300 million for Santa Clarita schools, he realized he could make a big difference locally.

John knows it won't be easy. Heck, he even had to fight a veteran member of the CUSD board, Laura Pearson (who's up for re-election), in order to get the bond measure passed. It seems Laura was more concerned with local politics than she was with getting much needed funds for local education (specifically, she has a long-standing grudge against the Hart school district and didn't want any money going to them, even if it meant depriving Castaic students of money as well), so Mrs. Pearson fought to kill that bond measure.

Fortunately for your kids, John provided the leadership that got Measure SA passed and that money will go toward improving education in Santa Clarita and building a brand new high school to ease overcrowding. Bottom line, John has already proven himself to be a principled fighter and I have no doubt that if given the opportunity to represent this district, he'll do everything possible to make sure the kids, rather than politics, come first.
