Valencia resident David Gauny formally announced his candidacy Friday for the Santa Clarita City Council in 2010, and current council member Bob Kellar endorsed his bid for office.

With a slogan of “People First,” Gauny — who became prominent by leading a fight against Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital expansion — rallied about 20 supporters during a brief news conference outside City Hall.

“I don’t have all the answers, (but) I’m committed to listening to people here,” said the 42-year-old mortgage professional, who has lived in Valencia for about six years.

Gauny laid out six core points for his campaign: Better support and communication for local businesses; smarter development and higher-paying jobs; less density in neighborhoods; a law enforcement focus on gang and white-collar crimes; improved senior citizen services; and transparency at City Hall.

“I want better checks and balances,” he said.

Kellar, who was first elected in 2000, indicated it may be time for some change at City Hall.

“I find (Gauny) to be a very bright man,” he said during the news conference. “Any organization, for the health of it, needs occasional change.”

Kellar was re-elected in 2004 and 2008 and has said his current four-year term will be his last. He said he does not expect his endorsement of Gauny to create friction between him and three fellow council members, whom Gauny is seeking to unseat.

Kellar lauded the work his colleagues have done.
