For Santa Clarita Christian's baseball team it was a test of tenacity when it faced Notre Dame in the first round of postseason action on Friday.

The Mountain Pass League's No. 1 team defeated SCCS 3-1 at Pete Reese Field.

Although the final result was a loss for the Cardinals, they didn't come away disappointed.

"We gave them battle." said SCCS head coach Garrick Moss. "That's as good a team you're going to see in Divsion VI and we really played with them."

The Cardinals finished first in the Heritage League with a record of 9-3 and for senior starting pitcher Brock Heerdt it was a season that he looks back on fondly.

"It was definitely amazing," he said. " We won the league championship and I didn't even think we would get that far."

Heerdt pitched three innings, allowed three hits and struck out one.

With a team that only has 13 players, four of which are graduating seniors, Moss is pleased with his burgeoning squad's performance.

"We're young and inexperienced and these guys really held their own." he said. "The fact that we hung around with them,I was really impressed with these guys and their character and what they showed."

For the first two innings the Cardinals held the Titans scoreless and relief pitcher Nick Bando threw four innings of one hit ball, striking out three.

"Our two pitchers really controlled the game." Moss said. "Nick dominated and I was proud that they held on to a team with that quality."

Bando stepped in earlier this season to complement Heerdt, who at the time was the team's only pitcher. It's paid off for the Cardinals.

"Nick was a big help this season, coming in as pitcher." Heerdt said. "Nick helps me stay calm the whole time and makes me relaxed when I'm up there and really my success is contributed to Nick calling certain pitches at certain times."

Bando tripled in the bottom of the fourth and scored the Cardinals only run off a wild pitch.

Although the Cardinals out hit the Titans 5-4 it was their three errors on the game that led to the Titans three runs.
"We played our hearts out and we had a good attitude," Bando said."I am happy that I got to play with these guys, I had tons of fun."

Looking back on the season, Moss credits the team's camaraderie and the leadership of the seniors in getting them to the postseason.

"Coming together as a team, we're real close," Moss said. "Those four seniors carried us and pushed the team and brought the level of excellence up."
