Vakay doesn’t get it

Lynn Vakay (“McKeon gets it: Access is rooted in a free market,” The Signal, Sept. 18) believes (as Buck McKeon does) that the U.S.A. has the “best health care system in the world.”

Yet the people who are debating this issue and have the same views as Ms. Vakay have the best care in the world. They are the men, women (and families) of Congress and the Senate! They have doctors, nurses and lab technicians on call at the Capitol for any of their health needs. No time off work is needed to take care of their health problems. They even have a pharmacy on site so they can treat their illnesses.

Currently there are 46.3 million Americans with no health insurance. Forty percent of those die due to the lack of health care which cannot be provided without insurance. Many people with families go bankrupt due to the high cost of health care needed for loved ones. A simple cold could turn into an infection and perhaps pneumonia (or other serious illness) if not taken care of quickly.

A person dies every 30 seconds due to lack of health insurance and many are the youth Ms. Vakay refers to who are being “hypnotized into socialistic thinking” by our education system. Ms. Vakay also feels that some are trying to “rewrite American History.”

I’d like to ask Ms. Vakay, how is that possible, and what does history have to do with today’s lack of health care for the ones who need it most?

When our youth are ill and the parents can’t afford health insurance, they must pay for it up front, go to an emergency room or the child receives no services at all. They want their child to get treated. They want their child to get well. They want a long life for their child.

They want the “best health care in the world,” just like all those fighting and their families receive in Washington, who can afford to choose their own health care providers.
