LETMESAIL will host its third annual S.N.A.P. Flag Football Tournament at Cougar Stadium on the Valencia campus of College of the Canyons on Sunday, Oct. 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Six local S.N.A.P. (Special Needs Athletes and their Peers) teams will participate, as well as other teams from Southern California.

The event is co-sponsored by College of the Canyons. Players and coaches from the college's Cougar football team will be on hand to help out, as well as volunteers from the community and LETMESAIL.

This event is free and open to the public. Community members are encouraged to come and cheer on the S.N.A.P. athletes.

Until recently, there was no football league for people who are disabled.

Through a partnership with LETMESAIL, a non-profit organization providing social, educational and recreational activity for the disabled, the S.N.A.P. Football League was formed in 2007.

S.N.A.P. promotes relationships between special needs athletes and their peers through competitive, non-contact flag football. In S.N.A.P. there is no blocking, no tackling, no contact, just fun. The S.N.A.P. program emphasizes diversity and teamwork.

The peer athletes in Oct. 18's event are members of the Canyon High School football team. These peers not only mentor the special needs athletes, but also play on the field with them in the role of the quarterback.

This integrated relationship has already built self-esteem, as well as encouraged the special needs athletes to believe and succeed.
