Bring back free market

I read your article "Illegal contractors arrested" (The Signal, Sept. 25) with disgust and shame for California.

Behold our bankrupt state and our overburdened police force in all their glory, enticing and entrapping hard-working builders during a recession with the chance to bid on a project, only to arrest them for trying to get work and please a homeowner! What kind of world is this?

Nobody was defrauding anyone ... none of these builders was pretending to be licensed contractors.

They were merely looking to provide their services as craftsmen and make a living - surely the most basic right of any human being.

By what right does anyone (including the government) step between a willing buyer and an upstanding seller, let alone arresting the latter?

Oh, I know the justification: The government is "protecting" homeowners like us from ourselves and keeping us from making bad choices, right? Poppycock!

The article reveals the true intent of all this nonsense: Licensing laws protect artificially higher prices for the licensed group, at the expense of buyers (and unlicensed sellers). How revolting!

It's high time we treat adults like adults, bring back the free market, get the government out of our lives and leave protection rackets to the Mafia.
