A short history of Hillary’s lies

"Hillary has always been a liar - why all the fuss about her sniper kerfuffle?"

Why, after a lifetime of lying (oops, excuse me - misspeaking), is Hillary Clinton's whopper with respect to her Tuzla airport landing creating such a stir?

I suppose the real question is: Why, all of a sudden, is the media exposing her mendacity when they have buried it on every previous occasion?

The answer is quite simple - she's running against a fellow Democrat, Obama. If this were the election campaign - as opposed to the primaries - and Hillary were running against a Republican, I can assure you that CBS would not only not have brought out the video clip of her actual landing at Tuzla, but probably would have burned the tape.

True, Fox would have put the truth on the table (if they had a comparable video), but it would never have received the exposure that the video clip did by virtue of its being put out by CBS.

That's the real beauty of the Clinton/Obama dust-up; a slug of the MSM is for Obama, and, as a consequence, the Clintons don't get the protection that they have customarily received from the MSM.

That is just one of the delicious benefits that the heated Democratic primaries have delivered. As I observed in a previous column, the Clintons are notorious liars, and the eight years during which they
occupied the White House produced an unrelenting torrent of mendacity.

As I recall, it was David Horowitz, one of the truly gifted conservative pundits, who made this observation: Bill Clinton lies to help himself; Al Gore lies because he can't help himself.

What David was saying was that Clinton lied to cover over his misdeeds.

Gore, on the other hand, was guilty of these petty lies - for example, he invented the Internet; the movie "Love Story" was about him and Tipper - the typical efforts of a little boy to engage in self-aggrandizing gestures. Gore's deception was the deception practiced by an insecure doofus, trying to pad his resume.

Then you come to Hillary, a woman who has, as Bill Saffire observed, mendacity built into her DNA. She lies even when she doesn't have to, and/or she tells huge lies when little ones might just do the trick.

Dick Morris, who has, over the years, served as an able and informed translator of Hillary's lies, provided the following list in a recent (3/26/08) Townhall.com column entitled "Hillary's List of Lies":

Admitted Lies
* Chelsea was jogging around the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. (She was in bed watching it on TV.)
* Hillary was named after Sir Edmund Hillary. (She admitted she was wrong. He climbed Mt. Everest five years after her birth.)
* She was under sniper fire in Bosnia. (A girl presented her with flowers at the foot of the ramp.)
* She learned in The Wall Street Journal how to make a killing in the futures market. (It didn't cover the market back then.)

Whoppers She Won't Confess To
* She didn't know about the FALN pardons.
* She didn't know that her brothers were being paid to get pardons that Clinton granted.
* Taking the White House gifts was a clerical error.
* She didn't know that her staff would fire the travel office staff after she told them to do so.
* She didn't know that the Peter Paul fundraiser in Hollywood in 2000 cost $700,000 more than she reported it had.
* She was instrumental in the Irish peace process.
* She urged Bill to intervene in Rwanda.
* She played a role in the ‘90s economic recovery.
* The billing records showed up on their own.
* She thought Bill was innocent when the Monica scandal broke.
* She was always a Yankees fan.
* She had nothing to do with the New Square hasidi pardons (after they voted for her 1,400-12 and she attended a meeting at the White House about the pardons).
* She negotiated for the release of refugees in Macedonia (who were released the day before she got there).

With a record like that, is it any wonder that we suspect her of being less than honest and straightforward?

Mark Steyn, in a column in the Orange County Register on March 29, produced the following spoof regarding a possible obituary for Sir Edmund Hillary, Hillary's alleged namesake: "New Zealander For Whom Sen. Clinton Named Dies; Also First Man To Climb Everest. Sen. Clinton Was At The Summit To Greet Him After Landing Under Heavy Sniper Fire From The Abominable Snowman."

The point of this column is neither to refresh your memory as to the essential dishonesty of the Clintons nor to catalog evidence of such; rather, it is to point out, as Steyn has noted, "There's something weird about the need to tell quite so many unnecessary fictions." And down the road we shall explore that "weirdness" in greater detail; for the present this reminder will do.

The real point of this column is to point out two delightful things: (1) Because the MSM, or a good slug of them, are in Obama's corner, they no longer provide cover for the liberties that Sen. Clinton takes with the
truth, and, as a result (2) the fact that the empress has no clothes is revealed to all.

And then, of course, there is the blatant hypocrisy of the MSM, which has also been exposed in the process of revealing the naked truth about the naked lies of Sen. Clinton.

Thus she now gets the same treatment from the MSM (or at least a substantial segment of it) routinely reserved for Republicans - how's that for a delightful touch of irony; the iron lady is no longer bulletproof.

Ken Eliasberg was a 24-year resident of the Santa Clarita Valley before he moved to Upland, where he now resides. His column reflects his own views, not necessarily those of The Signal. "Right About Now" runs
Fridays in The Signal and rotates among mostly local Republicans.
