A Newhall man accused of attacking a teenage boy with a knife in Newhall this week is set to be arraigned today at Santa Clarita Superior Court, authorities said.

Gildardo Villaruel, 19, of Newhall, also known as "Speedy," has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder, according to court documents.

Deputies arrested Villaruel Tuesday night and held him in lieu of $1 million bail after he and another suspect allegedly attacked a 16-year-old boy walking near Newhall Avenue and 15th Street, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Darren Harris.

Two suspects reportedly attacked the Valencia teenager about 5:45 p.m. They punched him and shouted gang-related remarks, Harris said. Deputies do not believe the victim is gang-affiliated.

One suspect pulled out a knife and tried to stab the teen, who fended off the attacks before fleeing to a nearby Boys and Girls Club and calling police. The teen received minor cuts on his neck and bruises, Harris said.

Deputies responded to the scene and spotted two suspects matching descriptions the teenager provided a couple of blocks away near 15th and Walnut streets. As the deputy approached the suspects on foot, they split up and ran away, Harris said.

The deputy saw one suspect run through adjacent yards.

Some residents helped the deputy by pointing out the direction in which the suspect fled, Harris said.

Other deputies responding to reports of the chase found Villaruel, who had blood on his shirt, and arrested him at 6:30 p.m.

Sheriff's officials have not yet determined who the blood belongs to, Harris said.

Villaruel has a previous conviction for second-degree robbery, which he pleaded no contest to in June, said Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office spokeswoman Shiara Davila-Morales.

Deputies are still searching for the second suspect, a Hispanic male about 5 feet 5 inches tall and 150 pounds with brown eyes and a shaved head. He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue pants, Harris said.

"It's just a matter of time before we identify and track down this second suspect," Harris said. "So it would be in his best interest to contact the Santa Clarita Valley station, and he can tell his side of the story."

Anyone with information about the suspect can contact the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station at (661) 255-1121 or the anonymous caller line at (661) 284-2847.
