The city's film office issued 31 permits in April, making it the best April on record.

According to the film office, April's numbers come as a 63 percent increase when compared to April 2007, when 19 permits were issued.

Previous numbers show that 24 permits were issued in April 2006, 18 permits in April 2005, 23 permits in April 2004 and 17 permits in April 2003, which was the first full year the city handled film permitting.

Film Associate Jessica Freude attributes April's high numbers to the city's efforts to raise awareness of the benefits of filming locally, which include the many available resources and Enterprise Zone designation.

"We consistently look to maintain a presence of filming in the Santa Clarita Valley," she said.

Currently, Freude said the television series Knight Rider is being filmed in the Santa Clarita Valley, along with two pilot shows, "1%" for HBO and 20th Century Fox's "This Might Hurt."

At the same time, filming is continuing at Santa Clarita Studios for ongoing programs, including "NCIS," "Big Love," "The Unit" and "The Riches." Santa Clarita Studios and Melody Ranch will also be home to the
feature "Manure," starring Billy Bob Thornton.

Freude believes filming levels have returned to what they were before the writers strike earlier in the year, which halted production of local television shows and movies.

"The same momentum prior to the strike seems to be back," she said, noting that the city hopes it will continue.

Freude said the city is happy that filming has returned, especially as it contributes more than $20 million in economic benefit annually to Santa Clarita and its businesses.

"The community is certainly film friendly," she said, adding they are happy to see people in the film industry back to work.
