A 13-year-old boy died today in a collision on northbound Interstate 5 just south of Calgrove, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The boy was the passenger in a moving truck driven by his grandfather.

The truck pulled over to the right shoulder of the freeway and slammed into the back of one of two cars that had been involved in a prior crash, officers said.

The cause of the collision was under investigation and the identities of the victims have not been released.

Northbound traffic in the Newhall Pass was backed up on the I-5 south of the 405 split, and on the 210 as far east as Highway 118 through the early evening.
