Learn the facts, Rizzo

Regarding Phil Rizzo's Sept. 23 Opinion column in The Signal, "Don't look for the word ‘compassion' in the U.S. Constitution:" Oh, brother.

It's the usual nonsense when liberals try to use the general welfare clause of the Constitution.

That clause has nothing to do with "welfare" as in "welfare checks;" and if Rizzo had ever read any of the contemporary writings of the Founders he'd know that. It means preserving the rights of individuals, and the integrity of our political system and national security.

There's nothing in the Constitution about having a "big heart," either. Complete pap. The Constitution provides equality of opportunity, not of outcome. Everyone has the same opportunity to secure for themselves the best health care they can personally afford. The idea that the federal government is supposed to somehow provide this is complete nonsense.

To use one of my favorite quotes, this one from Father of the Constitution James Madison: "I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on the objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents."

The reality is that no matter what happens, Bill Gates will always be able to afford better health care than almost anyone else and liberals will still be squawking about it.

Further, a reality check. Americans did not give Obama a "resounding victory." A little over half the electorate voted for him in an election in which he wasn't even opposed by an advocate of true conservatism. There's nothing in the least resounding about that at all. And that was the absolute pinnacle of his approval.

His numbers have been steadily falling since then. They are currently lower than those of the Evil Bush at the same point in his first term. And the majority of people in this country oppose any revamp of the country's current system by any of the proposals being put forth by the Democrats.

Those are just plain facts.
