Due to city of Santa Clarita staff efforts and outreach, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) improved Santa Clarita's ‘Community Rating' from a "9" to an "8" in the NFIP Community Rating System (CRS), resulting in a 5 percent increase in discounts applied to flood insurance policies.

Community members residing in local floodplains areas will now receive a 10 percent discount on new federal flood insurance policies written after the new rating goes into effect on Oct. 1.

The NFIP's CRS program ranks cities according to outreach conducted and flood protection provided for residents in floodplains.

Since Santa Clarita's inception to the CRS program in 2001, the city maintained a class 9 rating, giving community members a 5 percent reduction in federal flood insurance premiums. This year, the NFIP improved Santa Clarita's rating to "class 8" after city staff submitted outreach and information gathering results on local efforts done to protect floodplains residents from flood damage.

"Thanks to the efforts of city of Santa Clarita staff, community members residing in floodplains areas near the Santa Clara River and tributaries can now enjoy a 10 percent reduction in flood insurance premium costs for new policies," Mayor Frank Ferry said. "As part of the National Flood Insurance Program, the city of Santa Clarita works diligently to maintain development standards in local floodplains to protect residents and structures from floods and now residents can enjoy the same federally-backed flood insurance at an affordable and discounted rate."

Through its involvement with the NFIP, the city of Santa Clarita is assured federally backed insurance and financial assistance for damage caused by floods in local floodplains areas. NFIP policies also allow residents to receive flood protection insurance rates much lower than those offered through private insurance providers.
