Steve Lunetta: Stop making conservatives look crazy

It is always bad to start an opinion column by apologizing. But, there are some things we conservatives are doing that are just plain wrong.

Some folks out there may get upset with me and write angry letters. That's OK. If I offend you, I apologize. Or, I'll just blame Uncle Earl.

But, I encourage you to think differently about the following topics.

We need to stop doing certain things that are hurting ourselves and the conservative cause.

To all of the "birthers" out there: President Obama was born in Hawaii.

There is a reasonable explanation for why the seal can't be seen in photographs - it's white! Embossing can't be seen when copied.
Two newspapers carried his birth announcement in Honolulu.

He's the president. Stop wasting time arguing a point few believe. It makes us look like kooks.

Focus your energy on supporting and working for the party. That's how we'll beat Obama and his horde of socialists.

Just stop it.

A man named Robert Vaughn now claims to be the chair of the Republican Party in Los Angeles County.

Through parliamentary maneuvering and shenanigans, Robert believes he now controls the GOP in L.A.

Stop it, Robert. I was at the election and your team was fairly swept from office.

The true chairman of the party, Jane Barnett, is a good, decent and skillful individual to have as our leader.

Your bickering and ludicrous behavior is a distraction to the party.

Just stop it.

People keep complaining The Signal is unfair and biased on its Opinion page.

Frankly, I read things I agree with and things that make me angry on the very same opinion page nearly every day.

Both the right and the left seem to be balanced on a weekly basis (although I still think there is room for one more conservative column!).

I'm tired of people whining about The Signal. Notice that the editors still keep printing columns and letters that are critical about them?

If they were truly biased, wouldn't they just bury them? If something upsets you, don't criticize the paper but write a column or letter supporting your view and send it in. That is how we change hearts and minds.

Just stop it.

Sarah Palin was not a great candidate. C'mon, let's stop kidding ourselves. Her behavior since the election has been, at best, erratic and, at worst, bizarre.

Is this a person we would want a heartbeat away from the most powerful position in the world? I think not.

While her conservative politics were excellent, Palin paled in comparison to Mike Huckabee. Mike had all of the conservative credentials we needed, a sterling reputation as a governor and was funny and glib to boot.

He made all of the other candidates look stiff and uncomfortable. Palin was not the correct choice.

Just stop it.

Health care is broken in this country. Costs are rising exponentially and many families simply cannot afford coverage now.

Fifteen percent of Americans do not have health care insurance. This is unacceptable.

However, what Obama is presenting now as "reform" is laughable. It is a crude attempt by liberal thinkers to resolve a very complex problem. And they have failed.

But our reaction should not be to start screaming about "death panels."

Once again, we look like wingnuts. Let's let cooler heads prevail, take a deep breath and begin to reason through what is broken.

Let's reform tort lawsuits and stop frivolous litigation. Let's get people out of the ERs and into normal doctor's offices for non-emergency preventative care. Just stop it.

I know some Democrats have read this column with glee but the last one is for you.

Have you noticed that the economy is terrible, companies are going under and folks are losing their jobs?

But the crime rate is the lowest since the 1950s. This goes against the dogma that tells us that when the economy goes down, crime goes up.

There is a simple answer - just look at the prison system. Three strikes has filled it to overflowing with bad guys.

We have removed much of the element in society that resorts to crime when things get tough. Good people find other ways to make ends meet.

Bad people stick up a 7-Eleven. Throwing bad people in jail works. Your "compassionate complaining" is not substantiated by the facts.

Just stop it.

Let's turn our anger into something useful. Irrational and emotional responses to issues do not win hearts to our cause. We'll leave that behavior to the Democrats.
