We, the people, to blame

Regarding The Signal's Aug. 2 editorial in the Opinion section, "No one goes back to Sacramento:" Hear! Hear!

The truth is there are plenty of unqualified and non-deserving people who run for office on just the mere fact that they either have the money to run, they talk a nice talk, walk a nice walk or just plain look good. As you said, "No other qualifications needed."

All this is not totally their fault. We, the people, are to blame for this. We just sit back and let this happen.

Why? Because we're lazy.

We don't do our homework, we don't ask questions, we aren't proactive in finding out if these individuals are ready to hold the offices they are running for.

Are they qualified for the task awaiting them or are they just there to see if they can make it to a higher office by mouthing what they think people want to hear?

In my opinion if an individual is not responsible in running their own personal lives - if they lie, cheat and are dishonest - what makes you think they can run the government, locally or higher up?

There are many individuals walking around in the political arena who have not paid their taxes, and don't care who they hurt as long they get what they want.

There are those who think they are above the law because they hold a public office. Do we have an obligation to see that candidates meet the standards that go along with holding such offices?

You're darn right, we do. If not us, then who?

Where do we start? Right in our own backyards.

We have local elections coming up. Take a look at whose running. Do you know enough about them to say, "Yes, I trust that individual to be a spokesperson for me"?
