Clearing up Vakay’s column

Reading columnist Lynn Vakay's opinion column in the Sept. 18 Signal ("McKeon gets it: Access is rooted in a free market"), I must point out the fact that the "non-partisan Lewin Group" she refers to as expert on health care policy issues is, in fact, a subsidiary of United Healthcare, one of the biggest health insurance companies in the country.

While saying that this organization - frequently quoted by Republicans in their opposition to needed health care reform - is (technically) non-partisan, that does not mean that it is unbiased, does it?

Talk show host Rachel Maddow of MSNBC has exposed this group as not much more than a front for the current health care insurance lobby.

If readers want to learn how the insurance industry is manipulating the debate on reform, her investigative work is excellent, and her show a great place to gain needed perspective.

Knowing who is behind policy pronouncements is essential if we are to use real facts in moving our country forward to meaningful health care reform in the weeks ahead.
