Senior health care at risk

I am convinced that President Obama has not read the health bill up for consideration in the House. I have not. It is just too large.

However, I have read the parts that affect seniors.

Obama says Medicare benefits will not be cut and he is correct. What he doesn't tell you is that Medicare reimbursement will be cut drastically.

This means even fewer doctors will participate in the plan and it will be harder to get treatment for the most basic health needs.

Yes, our health care system needs help. But a complete government takeover is not the answer.

Obama says the package will be paid for out of waste and fraud.

If it was that easy, why aren't they stopping the waste and fraud now and using that to pay for a Medicare system that is going bankrupt?

The truth is no government agency has ever been run more efficiently than the private sector.

The best way to fix this problem is to reform malpractice legislation. The problem with this is that too many politicians have their hands in the lawyers' pockets.

We need to make health insurance truly competitive by allowing customers to purchase policies across state lines.

Again, politicians' pockets are being lined by the insurance companies.

These two measures would go a long way to making health care more affordable for all. Add a safety net for those who truly cannot afford health care.

Finish with oversight for things like not allowing pre-existing conditions and not allowing a company to drop a patient because they get sick, and I think everyone would be happy.

Finally, we as citizens should require our representatives to read everything they vote on. They are collecting their paychecks from us, after all.

If a bill is too large to read, either vote no or don't vote until it is sent back and simplified. Our representatives in the House and Senate should have the courage to stand up to the special interests and let them know they'll not be manipulated.
