"Phantom" opens this Saturday, Sept. 26 at the Canyon Theatre Guild, with performances every weekend through Oct. 31.

This Halloween theatergoers can experience the thrill of "Phantom" at the Canyon Theatre Guild's playhouse in Old Town Newhall.

This haunting story, based on the 1910 novel by Gaston Leroux, has been adapted for stage and screen in many variations. This "Phantom," as conceived by Maury Yeston and Arthur Kopit, presents the story of "Phantom of the Opera" with a different approach. Here, the Phantom is not a monster, but a tragic character who, despite his outward imperfections, is good inside. This Phantom has a family and even a sense of humor.

Erik (the Phantom) is played by George Chavez and Christine Daee is played by Jill Kocalis Scott. The cast includes Frank Rock as Inspector Ledoux, the chief of police and Michael Davies as Carlotta's husband and manager, Cholet. Jim Robinson is The Minister of Culture. John Morris is Jean-Claude, the stage manager. Gin Treadwell-Eng is Belladova (Erik's mother), and JT Friedman plays the young Erik The production is under the direction of Patti Finley, with Tamarah Ashton-Coombs serving as musical director and Musette Caing as choreographer.

Phantom opens on Saturday, Sept. 26, with performances every weekend through Halloween (Oct. 31). Tickets are $12, $15, $17 and reservations may be made by calling the box office at (661) 799-2702. The Playhouse is located at 24242 Main Street in Old Town Newhall.

The CTG is still offering free tickets to people who can show proof of unemployment (i.e. EDD papers, pink slip, etc.). There will be costume contests at both performances on Halloween, with prizes for the best costume. At the evening performance, it will be a Halloween party with a cash bar in addition to the costume contest.
