West Ranch tennis overcame a strong singles performance by Hart with some important doubles matchups early and took its Foothill League girls tennis opener 10-8 at Hart High on Tuesday.

The scoreboard told the tale of how close the match was with the teams' scoring even for most of the match.

"You never want to start league with a loss," said West Ranch head coach Eric Spiecker. "Hart was tough, they are a really good team and really well-coached."

West Ranch took eight of nine doubles matches, while Hart, behind straight-set wins for Anne Susdorf and Victoria Leonetti, controlled the singles points in a similar fashion.

With the teams facing an 8-8 tie, Hart's No. 3 pairing of Shannon Cholokian and Julie Lefko lost their match to the Wildcats' No. 1 doubles team of Salene Scamardo and Gabby Morici on a tiebreaker.

Scamardo and Morici then took a 6-4 win over No. 2 doubles Amber Bock and Sam Fructuso to earn the win for the Wildcats.

The win may have bigger implications down the road as Spiecker predicted this year's league champion will not be able to afford losses.

"Whoever wins league this year is going to be undefeated," Spiecker prognosticated, referring to how much parity exists at the top of the league.

While the tiebreaker was critical to the win, Spiecker said the victory wouldn't have been possible without the play of senior Emily Brown and sophomore Jordyn Jaffee.

"I think (their win) put us in a position to win the game," Spiecker said.

The pair, playing together for the first time due to a lineup change, picked up two of three sets from the No. 2 doubles spot, which put West Ranch up 6-5.

"We were scared at first, because Hart is such a big rival," Brown said. "There was pressure, but in a good way because it motivated us to play our best."

Susdorf received her first test of the season when freshman Ana Cecilia Fuentes took her to 4-5 before Susdorf broke her serve and took the match.

"We thought it was going to be a close one, and it was," said Hart head coach Patty Labat.

Labat was also particularly impressed by Leonetti, who was playing her first year of varsity and picked up three sets on the Wildcats, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3.
