No minimum wage hike

Marion Bruessel, I respect your opinion about minimum wage (“Espinosa all wrong,” The Signal, Letters to the Editor, Aug. 23). You obviously have a kind and generous heart. I also appreciate the fact your son works for his income and manages to live within his means. Too many people are perfectly comfortable allowing the government to take care of them.

I disagree with you, however, on the point that our president is helping immigrant workers by raising their minimum wage since they are not qualified to do anything else (as you put it). I believe he is doing them a great disservice in two ways.

First, he is perpetuating mediocrity by making low-level jobs a career for many of them rather than a starting point. If a person had the industry and diligence to raise enough money to immigrate to our country and go through the rigorous task of becoming a citizen, this individual certainly has the wherewithal to improve their circumstances in the workplace, i.e., be promoted.

Secondly, by increasing the minimum wage requirement, Obama would force many small businesses to close their doors. That doesn’t help the immigrant worker either since small businesses create 60 percent to 80 percent of new jobs, according to the Small Business Administration.

I would think a person might prefer $1 less an hour than no job at all. Many of our teenage employees (including two of my sons) do need the money for necessities and are thankful to have the minimum wage as it stands. An employer should offer a wage based on the job, not the circumstances of the employee.

History shows us that less government regulation helps foster a prosperous economy in a capitalist society, which we still have ... barely.
