Santa Clarita Christian football got blindsided Friday night.

The defending CIF-Southern Section Division I 8-Man champions lost 22-6 to Joshua Springs in Yucca Valley.

"We all are (in shock)," said Santa Clarita Christian head coach Garrick Moss. "I think it's a good thing to humble us, to get ready for the rest of the season."

The Cardinals fell behind 22-0 in the first half.

They committed three costly turnovers in the game, including fumbles by running backs Collin Keoshian and Colin Mayhugh in the first half that led to a pair of touchdowns by the Lightning (1-1).

The loss was surprising factoring in that Joshua Springs fell 48-0 to Faith Baptist last Saturday.

But Moss pointed out that Faith scored four touchdowns on long passes off breakdowns in the Joshua Springs backfield.

The Lightning won the CIF-SS Division I 8-Man title in 2007 and appeared in the Division II title game last season.

They were extremely physical, Moss said, which the Cardinals struggled with.

Keoshian scored a touchdown on a 7-yard run early in the fourth quarter, but later on he threw an interception that sealed the win for the Lightning.

Keoshian ran for 153 yards on 28 carries.

Mayhugh added 57 yards on eight rushes.

The Cardinals defense recovered in the second half, shutting the Lightning out and even succeeded with a goal-line stand.

But the first half proved too costly for the Cardinals.

"I knew it was going to be a tough game," Moss said. "I don't know if they overlooked them. I hope they learned from that."
