Bill Kennedy, chairman of the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce board, presents state Assemblyman Cameron Smyth with an award recognizing the politician as one of Santa Clarita Valley's "40 under 40," on Thursday at the Tournament Players Club in Valencia. More than 60 people were nominated for awards.

About 160 people crowded into the Tournament Players Club on Thursday night for a collective tip of the hat to some of the valley's younger professionals.

The "40 Under 40" awards ceremony was hosted by the Santa Clarita Valley Jaycees and the SCV Business Journal.

The recipients represented a broad range of backgrounds, from state Assemblyman Cameron Smyth and Tina Haddad, assistant to the city manager to sheriff's Deputy David Gomez and Ovington Michael Owston, director of the Repertory East Playhouse in Newhall.

After an introductory video by Parada Productions, the selection committee handed out plaques while attendees sipped wine from Leona Valley Winery.

A total of four Santa Clarita employees made the cut of honorees.

"We have a culture of hiring young, talented, dedicated people," city spokeswoman Gail Ortiz said. "It's a pleasure to be recognized.

"We don't do it for the awards. We do it because this is who we are."

The selection committee comprised of Bill Kennedy, chairman of the SCV Chamber of Commerce board; Mayor Frank Ferry; Randy Moberg, chairman of the Valley Industrial Association board; Morris Thomas, circulation director of The Signal; Teri Cadiente, president of Soroptomists International; and Doug Sutton, immediate past president of Rotary International. More than 60 people were nominated for the awards.
