The only incumbent running for Newhall School District board said Wednesday that he is pulling out of the race to spend more time with family.

Michael McGrath, current board president and finishing his first four-year term on the board, said family issues have surfaced in the last couple of months, which prompted him to withdraw his candidacy.

McGrath said the issues came up after he declared his candidacy in July.

With McGrath out of the running, the Nov. 3 race is left up to Craig Duswalt, Phil Ellis, Scott Miller and Christy Smith.

Incumbents Steve Tannehill and Bob Jensen, the other two board members up for re-election, have previously said that they will not run again.

Jensen, along with Newhall board member Suzan Solomon, is in the run for the William S. Hart Union High School District board.

While McGrath’s going to take it day-by-day, he said he has not ruled out another term later.

“I would be open to running again in the future,” he said.
