Make bike lane use mandatory

I agree that bike lanes serve a purpose (I ride a bike) but all bicyclists should be mandated to use the bike lanes when one is present. The city built a very nice bike path off of the main roadway along Soledad Canyon Road.

However, cyclists often ride in the roadway rather than on the bike path and this causes a serious traffic safety problem. Enforce the law and cite cyclists who do not use the expensive bike lane the taxpayers provide for them ... or get rid of bike lanes and let the bicyclists take their chances in the regular traffic lanes like they always did for years.

The only exception would be a large bike group or charity ride, but these must be escorted by a security vehicle.

Footnote: Sidewalks are not bike paths and in those cases when there is no bike lane, the streets should be used. However, remember that bicyclists are required to travel in the same direction as traffic flow while in the street.

Common sense applies here, obviously, and small children on their small bicycles are always an exception to the sidewalk rule. Safety is everyone’s main concern and cooperation will make it much easier for all.
