More bike lanes

I have never felt as affronted as when I read Doug Sink's complaint about the newly painted bike lanes on Decoro Drive ("The Decoro Drive change should be reversed," The Signal, Sept. 2).

It is astounding to me that someone can be so formulaic while still being so ridiculous and illogical. All of the points posed by Sink are completely ludicrous.

I have lived in Santa Clarita for 16 years, seen incredible growth and am consistently amazed with our abounding population. But with growth comes change.

It's impossible for all changes to be welcomed by everyone. However, something as beneficial and convenient as a bike lane might not come up against such walls.

Sink mentions how ridiculous it seems to him that a bike lane might be necessary on Decoro and I ask, "Why not?" Of course he hasn't seen many bikes over the years: There hasn't been a bike lane for them to utilize.

And someone who is not familiar with city biking would of course say bikers should use the sidewalk. It is exceedingly difficult to navigate between the lampposts, trash cans and bus benches that should rightfully be on the sidewalk. Thus we have created bike lanes.

It isn't so much that cars are more important than bicycles, but that in a collision a bicyclist will come out in worse condition, if at all.

Bicycle lanes not only offer protection, but also encourage use of bicycles.

I know I will utilize the bike lanes. And not just the new Decoro bike lanes but any bike lane paved in Santa Clarita. I use my bike to commute to work. I have to leave at 2:40 a.m. to bike the five miles to work. That's right, five - just two miles short of Sink's supposed insurmountable seven. And I assure you I bike home as well.

The short hours of sleep, the danger of biking at obscene morning hours and the sweat are completely worth not having to fill my car every day (or maybe cutting down on my carbon footprint?). Even if he doesn't want to bike, which is understandable too, his added five minutes are negligible.

I think many of us appreciate Santa Clarita's quest to be more bike-friendly and that we can easily handle a few steep inclines.
Though he has voiced a disgruntled opinion, I know there are many who will embrace and enjoy all new bike lanes.
